Agrigento and Piazza Armerina
Located on a plateau overlooking Sicily’s southern coast, Agrigento was founded as Akragas around 582 BC by a group of colonists from Gela, who themselves were the descendants of Greeks coming from Rhodes and Crete. “The Committee of Unesco Heritage Sites decided to inscribe this site on the list, considering that Agrigento was one of the greatest cities of the ancient Mediterranean world, and it has been preserved in an exceptionally intact condition. With its great row of Doric temples it is one of the most outstanding monuments of Greek art and culture”.
In just two hours, we reach the famous Villa Romana del Casale at Piazza Armerina, one of the most important archaeological sites from Roman times. The nearly 3500 square meters of coloured mosaics covering the floors of the villa have survived almost intact and earned the Roman residence the inscription on the list of the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The Committee decided to inscribe this property considering that the Villa del Casale at Piazza Armerina is the supreme example of a luxury Roman villa, which graphically illustrates the predominant social and economic structure of its age.
The mosaics that decorate it are exceptional for their artistic quality and invention as well as their extent. Among the most wellknown spaces are the corridor of the great hunt, the famous room of girls in bikini and the one of the erotic scene.
